What is Chrysalis and Emmaus?
Chrysalis and Emmaus were created by The Upper Room Ministry, whose vision is "To foster an international community of people and congregations who are seeking God, building a vision of new life in Christ, nurturing one another by sharing experiences of God’s love and guidance, and encouraging one another in Christian action to transform the world." We are devoted to bringing together the Christian community- and we all want to seek God fully in our lives.
The El Shaddai Emmaus of Indiana community hosts Emmaus walks for adults and Chrysalis flights for teens and young adults who are ready to take a step in growing their faith in a unique experience surrounded in prayer, agape love, raw truth, and most importantly the presence of God. Flights are separated events for girls and boys (different weekends). This is a nondenominational event and welcomes participants from all faith backgrounds.
You must have a sponsor (related or not) who has attended either a Chrysalis or an Emmaus
About Chrysalis
Chrysalis is for ages 16-23 (Unmarried) and it is an immersive 3 days where anyone attending will get to hear Talks, meet new friends, and most importantly, spend time with God. Throughout the 3 days you will listen to talks, each day based off of a different topic- Faith, Hope, and Love.
About Emmaus
Emmaus is geared towards ages 22+, and it is an immersive 3 days where anyone attending will get to hear Talks, meet new friends, and most importantly, spend time with God. Throughout the 3 days you will listen to talks, each day based off of a different topic- Faith, Hope, and Love.

What to expect on a flight or walk
- Learn and experience the deep love God has for you
- Times of self-reflection
- Listen to a series of talks that help you evaluate different aspects of your life and faith
- Make new friendships
- Fun, games, laughter
- LOTS of treats and snacks
How long is a flight or walk?
- Chrysalis flights are a three-day weekend event starting on a Friday morning through the following Sunday early evening.
Where do flights and walks happen?
- Flights are held at the Free Methodist Campgrounds in Clay City, Indiana.
What should I bring?
- Three days worth of comfortable clothes (keep weather in mind) and PJs
- Toiletries: bath towel, washcloth, soap, shampoo...
- Bedding: sheet, blanket(s) or a sleeping bag, pillow
- Any prescription meds (a flight worker will keep track of these and times for participants)
- A Bible if you want to
What to leave at home
- Cell phone (you’ll be okay without it for a few days)
- Watches (regular and smart watches)
- Tablets and other electronic devices
- Expectations, doubt, anxiety of what will happen over the weekend (it will be better than you can imagine anyway )
What are Hoots and Gatherings?
Hoots are Chrysalis community get-togethers, and Gatherings are the same for Emmaus! We hold these about once every 1-2 months, where we can slow down daily life and be together as a community. It is also a great opportunity to bring anyone you have considered sponsoring! These events are open to anyone, so if you have a curious friend who wants to know more, bring them along!
